CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY

Three Horses

What is Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST)?

CST is a non-invasive, hands-on therapy that aims to enhance the body's own healing capabilities. This therapy affects the circulation of the cerebral spinal fluid, which is located around the brain and the entire length of the spinal cord. Increasing rhythmic circulation of this fluid relieves pain and dysfunction, and several studies have linked it to the reduction of anxiety and stress. CST can be conducted alone in its own therapy session, or more commonly in conjunction with a massage.

How does CST work?

The craniosacral system, which consists of the membranes and fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord, has a subtle yet palpable rhythm. The pulses of the craniosacral rhythm come from the tiny narrowing and widening of the skull, as well as the gentle lengthening and shortening of the spinal column. These subtle movements on average occur 6-12 times per minute and are carried out to circulate cerebrospinal fluid which carries with it hormones, neurotransmitters, nutrients and immune cells. A well-nourished central nervous system will function optimally. An unbalanced central nervous system will increase the chance of pain and illness.

How do you know if you horse can benefit from CST?

Every horse is different and some will respond remarkably to this modality and for some it will have less effect. In general, this therapy can be helpful for the following conditions:

Chronic muscle pain

Anxiety, stress, nervousness

Tempromandibular joint pain

Sinus issues

Tension-related issues

**Cranial Sacral Therapy Should Never Be Used in Place of Medical Treatment**
